Names and Numbers, Free in Every Sport
Whatever the sport, a player's name and number cost nothing: no charge for a name and number, a name on its own, or a number on its own, on every shirt. The first printed surface is included, so a shirt with only names and numbers on the back is the shirt's price; with the logo on the front, printing the back is the usual extra surface, and if the logo is already on the back, they add nothing. We print every name exactly as it is typed on the list, so check the spelling before you order.

Designing team shirts that read from the stands
A team shirt has one job at a distance - who is that - and another up close - is that my kid's name spelled right. Here is what the rulebooks and the printers say, where teams usually slip, and how the designer covers each one.
What works
Numbers at least rulebook size
Even on practice and fan shirts, the NFHS minimums make good legibility floors - they were set so an official can read a number across a field or a court. The table below has them.

Plain block numerals, name above the number
Solid block digits in one color, with at most a thin border, read furthest. On the back, the name bar sits above the number with clear space between them.

One shared front, a personal back
The team mark on the front is the same for everybody; each player's name and number goes on the back. Everyone matches from the stands and every shirt is still theirs.
One ink on a solid team-color shirt
White or black lettering on a solid navy, red or royal shirt is cheap, legible, and avoids the faint ghosting thin strokes get from the white base printed under ink on dark shirts.

Measure the in-between ages
Around ages 12 to 14 players straddle youth XL and adult small, which are cut differently - the youth XL is wider and shorter. One team vendor calls this the most common sizing mistake; a try-on at practice settles it.

What to watch for
Assuming a printed tee is a legal game uniform
NFHS rules govern varsity game uniforms closely - football jerseys must be unaltered from the maker's design and cover the pads, and home and visiting colors are fixed by sport. Basketball only allows the digits 0 to 5.

Treat these as practice, warm-up, fan and rec-league shirts. For varsity game uniforms, check your state association's rules before you order anything printed.
Numbers that disappear into the shirt
The NFHS requires numbers that contrast clearly with the jersey; a dark number on a dark shirt fails at any distance.

Roster lettering starts in an ink that reads on the shirt color you chose, and Remi warns when lettering or art is too faint against the garment - with the lighter or darker version to switch to.
Duplicate numbers and misspelled names
Soccer and volleyball rules forbid two players wearing the same number, and a misspelled name is the one print mistake a family never forgets.

Borrowing a pro or college logo
"We're the Rams" does not license the Rams' logo. Universities and leagues enforce their marks, including against schools.

Script, drop shadows and gradients on numbers
Thin strokes and soft shadows are where the base layer and ink drift apart, and a shadow cannot be what makes a number readable under NFHS rules.

Ask for "Simplify for print" - fewer colors and thicker lines - or keep numbers in the free block lettering, which is built to print cleanly.
Shirts arriving after the first game
Every custom order is printed after it is placed, so the calendar starts when the last size comes in, not when the design is done.

How to approach it
Write the brief
Sport, level (practice, fan or rec league rather than a varsity game uniform), team colors, the first date the shirts are needed, and whether players get their own names and numbers.
Design the front and the back
A shared team design on the front; a back with the name bar and number sized to your sport's minimums.
Get the coach's sign-off
Send a For approval share link to the coach or league rep, and to the booster club or athletic director if the team is school-affiliated.
Paste the roster
One player per line - name, number, size. Fix any duplicate numbers Remi flags and check every spelling.
Order in one batch

Questions
Are names and numbers really free?
Yes - no charge for a name, a number, or both, on every shirt. If they are the only thing on the back, printing the back is the usual extra surface; if a design is already there, they add nothing.
Can I use these as game jerseys?
They are printed tees, hoodies and polos rather than mesh game jerseys, which suits practice, warm-ups, fans and most rec leagues. For varsity game uniforms, check your state association's NFHS-based rules first.
How do I put a different name on every shirt?
Paste the roster one player per line - name, number and size - and each shirt prints with its own player. Remi counts the sizes from the list and flags duplicate numbers.
Can players and coaches be in the same order?
Yes. Youth and adult sizes go in one order at the same price per size, so the coaches and the twelve-year-olds get the same shirt.
