Most of a tournament happens outside the round. A squad loads up before sunrise, unloads at a building nobody has walked into before, claims a stretch of cafeteria table, and lives there until awards. Rounds themselves are usually in business dress, so a squad shirt is not what anyone competes in. It is what they change into, sleep in on the ride home, and wear to school on Monday so everyone knows how the weekend went.
What goes on the front
Squads usually want two things on a shirt: who they are, and what they run.
- The event column. A squad name over a stacked list of events, LD, PF, Policy, Congress, Extemp, Oratory, Info, Duo, Impromptu, reads instantly to anyone in the activity and means nothing to anyone outside it, which is the point.
- The inside joke. A line from a case that turned into a squad catchphrase, a quote a coach says every practice, or a mock ballot comment ("Clear extensions. Speak slower.").
- The flow. A scrappy stack of flow paper, three timers and a highlighter, drawn simply.
- Plain and strong. "SPEECH & DEBATE" in heavy block letters with the school name under it.
Wording that squads use: "Cross-Ex Is My Cardio," "Ask Me About My Case," "Speak Up," "Points of Information Welcome," "Weekends Are for Tournaments," "Prep Time Is Running."
A front print suits a shirt worn mostly sitting behind a table. The back is a good place for the event column, the season's tournament list, or the full roster. The first surface is included in the price; each extra one is $8.99 to $10.99 depending on the product.
Tournament season and when to order
Most squads run from early fall through a spring qualifying tournament, with a busy stretch from October to February and a long gap over the winter break. That calendar sets the order dates:
- The season shirt or hoodie: order in September so it arrives before the first travel weekend. Five weeks out is comfortable; four weeks fits with little slack on free economy shipping; three is tight.
- The winter hoodie: some squads hand it out at a holiday party before the break. To have it by Christmas 2026, plan on ordering by Nov 30 with free shipping or Dec 3 with faster shipping.
- Qualifier shirts: order the week results post, not in the fall, since you will not know who is going.
Production takes up to 10 business days after checkout, then transit, typically 4 to 8 business days with free economy shipping or 2 to 5 with faster shipping where offered. There is no rush printing, and the cart shows expected arrival dates before you pay. Ordering deadlines and timing has a count-back calendar.
Novice and varsity
A squad usually has two populations with different needs. Novices are new, often younger, and the shirt is part of feeling like they belong. Varsity competitors have been around and want something that marks the years.
A few ways to handle both:
- One design, two colors. The same artwork on Navy for varsity and Sport Gray for novices, so the whole squad matches in style and the coach can tell the groups apart at a glance.
- A different second line. The squad name on everyone, with "NOVICE" or "VARSITY" underneath.
- Garment by group. Novices in the Adult Tee or Youth Tee; varsity in a hoodie they have earned.
A middle school program traveling with the high school squad can go on the same order in youth sizes. Youth and adult sizes are not one continuous scale, so size by fit (youth XL vs adult small).

Every size of a garment costs the same. Bulk prices come off automatically, counted on each item's own pieces across colors and sizes: the Adult Hoodie is $25.64 each at 12 or more, the Adult Crewneck $25.13 at 12 or more, and the Adult Tee $10.90 at 12 or more. Colors run Navy, Red, Royal, Black, White, Sport Gray, Forest Green, Gold, Maroon, Purple, Orange, Carolina Blue and Kelly Green on the hoodies and the Adult Tee; not every garment carries every one. Judges and parent volunteers
Every tournament runs on judges, many of them parents, and a host school runs on volunteers in the hospitality room, the tab room hallway and the registration table. A shirt helps both.
- Judges' shirts: the squad name on the front and "JUDGE" across the back makes it easy for competitors to find their judge in a crowded hallway. With the front printed, that back is one extra surface.
- Hosting a tournament: volunteers in one bright color, Gold, Kelly Green or Orange on the Adult Tee, with "ASK ME" on the back, give lost visitors someone to find.
- Coaches: the Adult Polo at $25.63, printed on the left chest, looks right in a ballot room and at an awards ceremony. It comes in Navy, Red, Royal, Black, White and Athletic Heather; size up if between sizes.
Qualifier and season shirts
Qualifying for the state or national level is the moment a competitor remembers, and it usually involves a handful of people, not the whole squad. That is exactly the kind of small order this setup is built for: no minimum, so three qualifier hoodies are a real order.
Keep the wording generic and your own: "State Qualifier 2027," "National Qualifier," "Qualified. Again." or the competitor's event and the year. Each qualifier's name can print on their own shirt for free from a pasted list, and a names list ships by the faster service for free. With the front printed, a back with only names is one extra surface. Do not use a tournament organization's logo or trademarked event names; a plain text design that says what they did reads better anyway.

Fundraising with a storefront
Travel is the expensive part of debate: entry fees, judge fees, hotel rooms, the van. Instead of collecting money for shirts, a free group storefront lets each family order and pay at the listed price, shipped to their home, and the group earns 10% of storefront sales. Sizes and counting
Squads are small, so collecting sizes is quick, but people still forget. Send a sizes link: each person enters who the shirt is for and their size, up to 300 answers, no account needed, nothing paid on the link, and one button adds the answers to your order (collect shirt sizes). A hoodie pulled over a blazer wants room, so many competitors size up one.
Paying through the school
If the activity account is paying, download a quote PDF from the cart, good for 30 days, and pay by invoice with a purchase order. A tax-exempt certificate is accepted (quotes and purchase orders). First-time customers can use WELCOME10 and returning ones REORDER10; one code per order, and a code does not add to a bulk price.

We only have five competitors. Is that worth an order?

When should we order the season hoodie?
