Washing and Caring for a Printed Shirt
How to wash a custom printed shirt so the design lasts: inside out, cold water, skip the dryer. What actually makes a print crack.
A print is ink bonded to fabric. Good care slows how it ages; nothing stops it entirely. A shirt worn weekly for a season will show it, and that is normal rather than a defect.
That said, most prints that crack early were not worn out. They were cooked.
The dryer does more damage than the wash
Heat is what breaks a print down, and a dryer applies more of it, for longer, than a wash cycle does. If you change one habit, change this one: hang it to dry, or tumble on low.
The short version
- Turn it inside out before washing. The print then rubs against the inside of the drum instead of against everything else in the load.
- Wash cold or warm, never hot.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats fibers and dulls a print over time.
- No bleach, including whitening detergents on colored garments.
- Never iron directly on the print. Iron inside out, or press around it.
Why a shirt cracks in month two
Almost always one of three things: it went through a hot dryer repeatedly, it was ironed face-down on the design, or it sat folded in a hot car for a week after an event. That last one surprises people — a box of shirts in a summer trunk gets hot enough to matter before anyone has worn them.
Telling a group how to wash them
Worth doing, and rarely done. When you hand out shirts to a team or a staff, say one sentence: inside out, cold, hang dry. Normal fading from wear is ordinary. A print that arrives cracked, misaligned, or clearly wrong is not — send a photo within 14 days of delivery and it gets reprinted or refunded. Sizing mistakes are the one thing we cannot take back, since each piece is made to order, so check the size guide before ordering for someone else.
