Custom Summer Camp Shirts That Survive the Session

Camp apparel takes abuse no other custom shirt does. It gets worn four days running, dunked in a lake, wiped with sunscreen hands, thrown in a bin with sixty others, and washed hot. Then it goes home in a duffel and stays in a dresser for years. Our camp shirts are plain, heavy Gildan cotton and cotton-blend garments, which is what that week asks for. What a camp actually needs
Most camps order for three groups, and each one needs something different from its shirt:
- Campers: one shirt each, sometimes two for a two-week session. The shirt is a uniform on outing days and a keepsake after.
- Counselors and junior counselors: a shirt that marks them as staff at a glance, often two per person so one can be in the wash.
- Directors, nurses and kitchen staff: something a little more put together for check-in day and parent pickup, like a polo.
A day camp of 80 kids with 12 staff might order 80 camper shirts, 24 staff shirts, a handful of polos and 10 spares. An overnight camp running four one-week sessions usually orders per session, against each roster.
Campers and staff should not match exactly
At a swim dock or a crowded museum, an adult needs to spot staff in under a second, from behind, in motion, at dusk. Same artwork in a different shirt color is the simplest way: campers in Royal, staff in Red. Two more options:
- "STAFF" across the back in big block letters, with the camp logo on the front. That back is one extra surface, $8.99 on the Adult Tee.
- A different garment for leads: the Adult Polo at $25.63 has a collar, and a collar reads at distance and in group photos even when every shirt in frame is the same color. It is printed on the left chest, not stitched, in Navy, Red, Royal, Black, White or Athletic Heather.
For counselors running field games in the heat, the performance tee is light, quick-dry polyester. The Performance Tee is $30.99 in adult sizes and comes in brighter options like Orange, Gold and Silver.
Cabin and color-group shirts
Color wars, cabin teams and age groups all work as shirt colors, and they make a dining hall or a field easy to sort. Keep one design and change only the shirt color. The Youth Tee comes in Navy, Red, Royal, Black, White, Sport Gray, Forest Green, Maroon, Purple and Kelly Green, so build your groups from that list; it does not include Gold, Orange or Carolina Blue. If older campers or staff are in adult sizes, the Adult Tee carries all of those plus Gold, Orange and Carolina Blue.
Color group ideas: Red Foxes, Royal Herons, Kelly Green Frogs, Purple Owls, each with the animal on the front and the camp name and year on the back. One order can hold every color, and the bulk price counts all of one item's pieces across colors and sizes.
Field trip days
On a trip to a zoo, a ballpark or a water park, the camp shirt becomes a headcount tool. Pick a color that is easy to pick out of a crowd: Red, Kelly Green and Royal are all on the Youth Tee. A big print on the back helps too, since counselors spend the day walking behind the group. Some camps print the camp name and a phone number for the front office on the back for trip days. Keep it to an office number, never a child's name.
Design for the wash, not the mockup
A mockup shows artwork clean, flat and full size on a white screen. Camp shows it crumpled, in motion, forty feet away, after a dozen hot cycles. Design for the second one.
- Keep the mark bold: thick strokes, one strong color hit, generous negative space.
- Hairline outlines and tiny type look sharp on screen and read as mush across a field.
- Squint at it at thumbnail size: if the camp name disappears there, it disappears on the shirt.
Wording ideas: "Camp Pinecrest, Summer 2027, Lake Days," "Unplugged Since 1962," "Mosquito Survivor," "Cabin 7 Forever," or a short camp cheer the kids already know. A chest print sits away from the backpack straps that grind a back print by week three, but back and sleeve prints are available on the Youth Tee and Adult Tee if straps are not a problem. Colors that last the week
Color does quiet durability work. Navy, Black, Forest Green and Royal hide lake silt, bug spray and campfire smudge through a full session. White and Sport Gray photograph beautifully on day one and honestly by day four. The color guide has the whole palette.

One price at every size, and youth and adult garments ship together in one order. Bulk prices apply automatically: the Youth Tee drops to $14.91 each at 24 or more and $11.21 at 50 or more; the Adult Tee drops to $10.90 at 12 or more and $9.03 at 50 or more. A hoodie is a good end-of-session item for overnight camps where evenings by the lake get cold. A canvas tote or mug makes a simple thank-you for staff (custom tote bags).
Sizes for kids
Parent forms guess, and kids grow between registration and July. Youth and adult sizes are not one continuous scale, so size by fit, not age: a tall eleven-year-old may fit an adult small better than a youth XL (youth XL vs adult small). Teen counselors usually wear adult sizes.
The easiest way to collect sizes is a sizes link: send it to families, each answer says who the shirt is for and what size, up to 300 answers, no account needed, and nothing is paid on the link. One button adds the answers to your order (collect shirt sizes). Add a buffer of about one spare per 15 campers in the middle sizes for late registrations and the kid who fell in the lake on day one.
Order before session one
Production runs up to 10 business days after checkout, plus transit, and the cart shows the expected delivery dates before you pay. There is no rush printing, so order at least three weeks before the first day of camp. Multiple sessions
Camps don't buy once in spring. Every session arrives with its own roster. Order against the roster you have and top up later: with no minimum, five shirts on a Wednesday is a real order. Some camps print one design for the whole summer and order per session; others put the session name and dates on each run. Order the next session while this one is still swimming. Returning customers can use the code REORDER10 (codes do not apply to polos). Nonprofit camps can pay by invoice with a PO and send a tax-exempt certificate (quotes and purchase orders).

Questions camp directors ask
Should staff shirts be a different color from camper shirts?
Usually yes. Same design in a different shirt color, or "STAFF" on the back, lets anyone find a counselor in a crowd.

What if a shirt arrives misprinted?
Send a photo within 30 days of delivery for a reprint or refund. A size ordered wrong is not returnable.
